Historic Preservation Program should be addressed to:
The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program is an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. It houses the staff of the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO), and serves to carry out activities mandated by the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966. AHPP is organized into four general program areas.
Central Operations- Grants and Finance. Management of agency financial resources and records, as well as administration of statewide grant programs.Federal Programs and Technical Assistance
- Administrative Support. Coordinates office secretarial resources and scheduling.
- Geographic Information Systems. Provides database management and user support for analysis of agency geographic information.
- Federal Review and Compliance. Reviews federally funded or licensed undertakings for potential impact on statewide historic resources.Main Street Arkansas
- Conservation Easements. Maintains and monitors easements on historic properties.
- Certified Local Government. Provides grant support and training for local government historic preservation authorities.
- Preservation Planning and Rehabilitation Tax Credits. Reviews historic restoration projects applying for federal tax credits.
- Technical Assistance. Provides information and training to the public on preservation methods and materials.
- National Register of Historic Places. As provided by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the State Historic Preservation Officer’s staff prepares and submits nominations for the National Register of Historic Places to the National Park Service.
- Historic Property Survey. Concurrent with the National Register, the SHPO staff surveys historic properties statewide and maintains detailed files on the state’s built environment.
Main Street Arkansas Program provides training and consultation to promote revitalization of historic downtowns in participating cities. Activities include:Education and Outreach
- Business Consultation. Free guidance for businesses and city leaders on increasing profits and promoting downtown commerce.
- Design Consultation. Free assistance in designing retail space and displays.
- Training. Main Street Coordinators conduct continuous training for local program directors.
This program area encompasses two broad activities:
- Primary and Adult Preservation Education. Statewide educational programs dealing with architectural history and preservation issues.
- Public Information. The Education and Outreach Program Director serves as the Public Information Officer for AHPP, and is responsible for all agency press releases and outreach, including publications, web sites, and mass mailings.

| Mailing Lists | AHPP maintains mailing lists of state and local elected officials, planning and development authorities, chambers of commerce, historical organizations, federal agencies, and interested parties for its grant, education, and federal review programs. |

| Section 106 Review Files | Agency forms, correspondence, maps, and staff notes relating to undertakings reviewed by the SHPO in compliance with Section 106 of the NHPA. |
| Conservation Easement Files | Easement agreements, staff review materials, project plans and specifications, and photographs relating to the administration of the Conservation Easement Program. |

The Arkansas Arts Council operates under rules and regulations, which have been approved through the Administrative Procedures Act, as outlined in its annual Guide to Grants. The grant guidelines are available on the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program Council.
